Cubbie Roo's Castle on Wyre is the oldest surviving medieval castle in Scotland, built in the mid-12th century by Kolbeinn Hrúga. Its central tower still stands inside an oval enclosure marked by ditches, a stone wall and an earthen rampart. The Orkneyinga Saga and King Haakon's saga mention it, while the roofless St Mary's Chapel nearby may have been raised by Kolbeinn or his son Bishop Bjarni.
