Cruach na Caoile

Cruach na Caoile is an island in County Galway where Saint Keelan’s Well still sits beside a ruined church, marked on nineteenth-century maps yet never formally inspected. That gap between cartographic presence and on-the-ground investigation gives the site an oddly provisional quality, as though it has been noted down but never quite confirmed. The well’s Irish name, Tobar Cáillín, connects it to Cáillín, the saint anglicised as Keelan, while local traditions attached to this particular place remain poorly documented. What is clear is that both Ordnance Survey editions recorded the well alongside the nearby church, suggesting it was a recognised feature of the landscape at least since that period of systematic survey.
