What is recorded here
Half a metre tall at most, the sandstone block carries a grooved cross circled like a halo, pulled from church ruins on Illaunmore Island in Lough Derg. It is small enough to hold, yet dense with distance: water, stone and time have worn every angle into a quiet shape. The cross does not argue or decorate; it marks a place where prayer was set into earth. Even displaced into a museum, it still points back across the bay to that hidden island church.
On display in Clare Museum, Ennis. A small, irregularly shaped block of sandstone (H 0.25m; Wth 0.22m; T c. 0.06m) with an incised multi-grooved cross in a circle. Originally from within the remains of a church (CL021A005001-) on Illaunmore Island in Lough Derg (Gleeson 1955, 57). See original location record (CL021A005003-).

Date of upload: 28 October 2014
Date likely to the early medieval period (c. 7th–10th century). The cross-slab may have served a liturgical or commemorative function within the church, and its carved design reflects Christian symbolism common in monastic or ecclesiastical contexts of the time.
