Cross-slab

What is recorded here

Stone Store, Visitor Centre. 29 August 2005. Described by leask (1950, 47) as a 'rounded top of a possibly erect slab, one side incised with a Greek cross of circular arcs surrounded by two circular bands, on the other the upper part of a two-line cross potent with a square centre expansion'. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 04 December 2012 See linked document with drawing from Harold Leask, Glendalough, Co. Wicklow: national monuments vested in the Commissioners of Public Works. Dublin, 1950. Stationery Office.
Probably dating to the early Christian period (5th–9th century), the cross-slab likely served a Christian commemorative or liturgical function, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the region. The Greek cross with circular arcs and bands may symbolize eternity or the cosmos, common themes in early Christian iconography.
