Cross-slab in Sevenchurches OR Camaderry

Part of exhibition display, Visitor Centre (30 August 2005). Described by Healy (1972, 28) as a ‘rectangular slab of mica schist 0.82m x 0.54m x 0.13m thick upon which is a ringed Latin cross. The ring overlies the arms of the cross which are expanded. There is a double circle at the centre of the cross. The inner circle and the spaces enclosed by the arms and ring are slightly recessed’. Likely dating to the early medieval period, the cross-slab reflects Christian symbolism and may have served as a memorial or waymark. The ringed cross design is characteristic of Insular art traditions in Britain and Ireland.
