What is recorded here
Breaker waves expose shallow rocks at Lemanaghan, but the church and its cross-slab remain above the tide. The old monastery belonged to Manchán, whose memory is still called forward on 24 January. The damaged slab has lost much of its shape, yet it keeps the place anchored when the sea changes the land around it.
A monastery at Lemanaghan (Liath Manchán) was founded in the 7th century by Manchán whose feastday is celebrated on the 24th of January (Ó Riain 2011, 429). Lower fragment of cross-inscribed slab that has been mounted on the N face of the S wall of Lemanaghan church (OF015-004003-) located close to the SE angle and immediately E of the church piscina. Only the incised outline of the lower part of the shaft of a possible cross survives.

Probably dates to the early medieval period, likely 7th to 9th century, associated with the monastery founded by St Manchán. The cross may have had both Christian symbolic significance and a role in marking sacred or territorial space.
