Inishcaltra is a small Clare island where a plain cross-slab still stands inside St. Mary’s church. The stone is about 1.44m long and 0.5m wide, with a bold two-line Latin cross cut across it. It belongs to the twelfth-century type and is set against the north nave wall, not far from the west gable. The island has long been called holy, and this simple slab may have marked prayer, ownership or remembrance before the present church took shape.

Erected against the N wall of the nave of St. Mary’s church (CL029-009008-) on Inis Cealtra and 7.75m from the W gable. Noted by Macalister (1916-17, 154, no. 35) as of ‘twelfth-century type’ and described as ‘a slab, 4ft 9in (1.44m) by 1ft 8in (0.5m), with a plain Latin cross of two lines, boldly cut.’ Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 6 October 2015
