Cross-slab in Glebe (rathvilly By.)

A granite slab (H 1.21m; Wth 0.53m; T 0.29m) with a ringed cross and branches off stem in relief on E face. Letters also carved all over E face probably sometime in the nineteenth century. Probably dating to the early medieval period, the slab features a ringed cross, a common Christian symbol from the 7th to 10th centuries. The addition of 19th-century letters suggests later commemorative or territorial use, while the original cross may have served a religious or waymarking function.
