Cross-slab in Glebe (rathvilly By.)

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

A granite slab (H 1.16m; Wth 0.51m; T 0.26m) with a Latin cross in relief on E face. Letters I H S carved above the cross and others around the cross, presumably sometime in the nineteenth century. (Harbison 1991, 188 (No. 19)) Reference: Harbison P. 1991 'Early Christian Antiquities at Clonmore, Co. Carlow' in Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy (vol. 91, C, Number 7), Dublin. Compiled by: Claire Breen Date of upload: 19 August 2011
Probably dating to the early Christian period, the cross-slab likely served as a memorial or waymark. The addition of the letters I H S in the 19th century reflects later Christian devotion, though the original carving may have had a more symbolic or liturgical role in medieval religious practice.
