Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00261 Dimensions: H 0.43, W 0.56, T 0.032 Outline cross with lozenge shaped centre and circular but angular terminal expansions. Inscription: Inscribed vertically 'M]AILSE[NCH]AILL'. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1898-1905 Condition: Upper cross arm and part of inscription missing. Probably early medieval in origin, associated with Christian monastic activity at Clonmacnoise. The cross design may have had both religious significance and a commemorative function, possibly marking a burial or memorial site.
