Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00276 Dimensions: H 0.74, W 0.615, T 0.047 Unusual outline expansional cross with circular central and termianl expansions. The terminals are connected by lines and the whole is contained inside a three line circular frame. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58. Condition: Complete but badly weathered since 1954. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-391, 681. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. Date likely to the 9th to 11th century AD, consistent with the high cross tradition in early Christian Ireland. The design may symbolize the cosmos or spiritual interconnectedness, and such slabs were often used as grave markers or commemorative monuments.
