Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00299 Dimensions: H 0.45, W 0.40, T 0.02 Outline expansional cross with median line. The semicircular terminal and circular central expansions are blank. Punch marks of cutting are still evident in the inscription and cross. Inscription: Part of a horizontal inscriptioin 'DUN CIR' below the arm of the cross. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: Badly weathered fragment. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), consistent with other Christian cross-slabs in Clonmacnoise. The design may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, reflecting the site's importance as an early monastic foundation.
