Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00240 Dimensions: H 0.37, W 0.265, T 0.05 A very fine double outline ring cross with hollowed angles and loops to the terminals. The angles are unusual. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984 Condition: All cross arms damaged and part of ring missing.. 9th- to 10th-century AD; the double outline ring cross is typical of early Christian Ireland and may have had a liturgical or commemorative function. Clonmacnoise was a major monastic site, and such crosses often marked burials or served as waypoints along pilgrimage routes.
