Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00394 Dimensions: H 0.182, W 0.15, T 0.0155 Part of a semicircualr terminal with looped ends and fret pattern. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984. Condition: Small flaked fragment with part of a terminal.. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. Date likely to the early Christian period (5th–9th century AD), given the stylized cross and fretwork typical of Insular art. Such slabs were often used as grave markers or commemorative monuments in monastic or ecclesiastical contexts.
