Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00343 Dimensions: H 0.82, W 0.47, T 0.037 Outline expansional cross with median line. The circular central and slightly larger than semicircular terminal expansions all contain fret patterning. The very short lateral arms are almost continuations of the centre. Inscription: 'OR DO MAILTEM' inscribed vertically. Evidence of discovery: Petrie 1822. Condition: Complete but very worn. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-148, 892 Stokes, M. Date likely to the 9th–10th century AD, consistent with the high cross tradition in Clonmacnoise. The cross-slab may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, reflecting Christian symbolism and monastic influence in early medieval Ireland.
