Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00036 Dimensions: H 0.36, W 0.35, T 0.02 An outline cross inside a single line frame. There are semicircles inside the cross arms adjacent to the frame. The inscription is beneath the frame. Inscription: 'MAELC[E]C'. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: Top part of slab missing and right side damaged. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-18, 473, 727. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. A copy of the record for this slab is available for inspection in the relevant Archaeological Survey of Ireland (SMR) file. Date likely to the early medieval period, 8th to 10th century AD, based on the cross design and context of Clonmacnoise as an important monastic site. The cross may have had a Christian funerary or commemorative function, with the semicircles possibly symbolizing radiating light or spiritual significance.
