Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

One cross-slab stands in Clonmacnoise, County Offaly, its stone edge worn smooth by centuries of rain and footsteps. It marks a burial older than memory, perhaps belonging to a monk, a child or a traveller who died beside the monastery walls. The cross carved into its face still points upward, holding the dead steady beneath the living sky.
See Lionard, Early Irish Grave-slabs, PRIA 60(1959-60), p 119, Fig 14, no. 10. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian monastic activity in Clonmacnoise. Likely served as a grave marker or commemorative monument, reflecting the area's historical role as an important religious site.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
