Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00073 Dimensions: H 0.38, W 0.305, T 0.06 An outline cross with stepped terminals inside a single line frame. There is a crosslet in the centre with bar terminals. There are also short lines coming up from the frame ending in bar terminals. Inscription: 'BRESSAL' - this inscription is above the frame. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: Complete but slightly flaked. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-112, 476. Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century AD), associated with Christian monastic activity at Clonmacnoise. The cross and crosslet symbols suggest a liturgical or commemorative function, common in early Irish Christian grave-slabs and monuments.
