What is recorded here

Half a cross, broken at the wrist, lies in Clonmacnoise with CLODLNA carved beneath its stub. The median line stops short of the centre, as if the maker ran out of stone or courage. Its angles are hollow, its ends rectangular, its surface so uneven the cross may have been chopped from a larger slab rather than cut whole. Whoever lost the top half also lost the name it pointed to.

Date likely to the 8th to 10th century AD, consistent with early Christian insular art. The cross may have had a liturgical or commemorative function, reflecting the monastic tradition of Clonmacnoise.
