Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00114 Dimensions: Unknown. Fragment of a double outline cross of arcs with triangular shaped terminal with sunken centre, from which protrudes a line cutting across the two line circular frame with a V-shaped terminal. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: OPW 1954-58 Condition: Now lost. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81-402. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. Likely dating to the Early Christian period (6th–10th century AD), the cross-slab reflects a fusion of Christian and prehistoric artistic traditions. Such crosses were often associated with monastic sites and may have had both religious and commemorative functions.
