Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00184 Dimensions: H 0.815, W 0.57, T 0.018 An outline ring cross with hollow angles. The stem of the cross has a pointed base. Inscription: 'OR AR CHUINDLES[S]', 'OR' runs across above the left arm, the rest down the left side. Evidence of discovery: Graves 1854. Condition: Complete but worn. Stem and inscription damaged. Date likely to the 9th–10th century AD, consistent with early Christian inscribed cross-slabs in Ireland. The inscription includes a personal name ("Chuindles") and may mark a Christian burial, reflecting the monastic and memorial traditions of the Clonmacnoise area.
