Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00476 Dimensions: H 1.36, W 0.75 Single line inscription at the top of a very large blank slab. It was probably intended to be upright. Inscription: 'MAEL MICHELL' Evidence of discovery: Petrie 1822. Condition: Very worn and streaked. National Monuments Service, Photo number: 81- Stokes, M. Date likely to the 9th–10th century AD, based on the style of the inscription and the context of Clonmacnoise as an early Christian monastic site. The name "Mael Michell" suggests a Christian dedication, possibly commemorating a local saint or religious figure associated with the monastery.
