What is recorded here

That is the smallest cross in the Clonmacnoise inventory: a twenty-centimetre shard where a tiny horizontal line cuts a vertical groove to make an unmistakable Christian mark. It may be all that survives of a taller grave marker, reduced by centuries to a fragment small enough to hold in one palm. The absence of writing does not weaken it; the cross still points upward, waiting for the dead person and lost story that disappeared around it.
