What is recorded here

Clonmacnoise cross-slab CLN00484 survived only as a fragment bearing part of an incomplete linear cross, with no inscription to identify the person it marked. The Office of Public Works recorded it during its 1954-58 discovery work, but the slab is now lost, leaving behind a broken line of stone and a nameless dead person beside the river. What remains is not a monument but a gap: a cross unfinished, a life unrecorded, and a graveyard that has given back one of its shapes to forgetting.
