What is recorded here

That is the smallest ghost in the whole inventory: eight centimetres of woman, a cross no bigger than a palm, and nothing written beneath it. Clonmacnoise kept kings, abbots and warriors in long slabs, but this fragment belongs to someone small enough to fit inside a child's jacket. Davis pulled it from the earth in 1984, and the Office of Public Works gave it a number as if size mattered. It does not. The church remembered everyone large enough to carve; this is the part of remembrance that resisted being forgotten.
