Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00516 Dimensions: H 0.42, W 0.225, T 0.05 Outline cross with two line circle. The arm of the cross extends over the circle. No inscription. Evidence of discovery: Davis 1984. Condition: Very worn fragment with part of frame.. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. Date likely to the early Christian period (7th–10th century AD), given the cross motif and association with Clonmacnoise, a major monastic site. The cross-over-circle design may symbolize the sun or divine protection, common themes in early Irish Christian iconography.
