Cross-slab in Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise grave-slab inventory (1992) number: CLN00581 Dimensions: H 7.25ins, W 4.5ins, T 1.5ins A piscina-like basin with a raised rim. Inscription: Only the 'E' and the lower part of a 'G' and 'S' above it were recorded by Macalister. Evidence of discovery: Macalister 1949. Condition: Now lost.. The Clonmacnoise inventory was compiled by the Office of Public Works. A copy of the record for this slab is available for inspection in the relevant Archaeological Survey of Ireland (SMR) file. Probably medieval in date, given the Christian context of Clonmacnoise and the partial inscription suggesting a name or dedication. The basin may have had a liturgical or symbolic function, possibly associated with ritual washing or as part of a memorial.
