Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the NE sector, at ground level. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 114) as slab 34A/34B, composed of red sandstone (dims 0.66m x 0.14m; T 0.09m). 'Latin cross in low relief (3mm), with small double-rounded hollows in the angles. Reverse of 34A. Bears a lightly pocked outlined Latin cross' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or commemoration, given its location within an ecclesiastical enclosure linked to St. Berrihert. Such cross-slabs often served as grave markers or devotional monuments.
