Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the N sector, on internal ledge. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 111) as slab 37, composed of red sandstone (dims 0.48m x 0.18m; T 0.08m). 'Lower portion of a Latin cross in very low relief (2mm). There are very small squared hollows in the angles (cut into the arms only). The bottom of the shaft is outlined and terminates in an unusual, cusped point. The marks of a chisel about 1cm wide can be clearly seen in the background. The back is not visible' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian use within the ecclesiastical site dedicated to St. Berrihert. The cross-slab may have served as a memorial or liturgical marker, reflecting the spiritual significance of the enclosure.
