Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the W sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 114) as slab 40A/40B, composed of reddish sandstone (dims 0.34m x 0.265m; T 0.09m). 'Equal-armed cross in low relief (3mm). The sides of this stone have been pocked into a smooth curve. Reverse of 40A. Bears an outlined equal-armed cross with open ends. Very lightly pocked' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or commemoration within a monastic or ecclesiastical setting. It may have functioned as a memorial cross slab, possibly linked to St. Berrihert, whose name suggests a local saint venerated in the area.
