Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the E sector, on internal ledge. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 110) as slab 11, composed of red sandstone (dims 0.46m x 0.14m), thickness and back not visible. Probably dates to the early Christian period (5th–9th century AD), given its association with a religious site. It may have served as a memorial or waymark cross, reflecting Christian devotion or commemorating a local saint, possibly St. Berrihert.
