Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the SE sector, on top of the wall. It does not appear is have been described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 102-26). The slab (dims 0.23m x 0.11m; T 0.06m) is decorated with the parallel incised lines of a cross-shaft. There is a small knob (H 0.05m) at the top of the slab, implying that a upper slab was inserted onto this slab. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or commemoration, given its location within an ecclesiastical enclosure linked to St. Berrihert. It may have served as a memorial or waymark, reflecting the spread of Christianity in the region.
