Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the E sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 110) as slab 8A/8B, composed of grey sandstone (dims 0.63m x 0.165m; T 0.11m). 'Roughly squared. Latin cross in low relief, with double square hollows in the angles. Well set out and neatly cut. Reverse of 8A. The surface is pocked all over and bears an outlined Latin cross' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or commemoration. Likely linked to St. Berrihert, a 6th-century Irish saint, and may have functioned as a memorial or liturgical cross slab within a monastic or ecclesiastical setting.
