Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the S sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 110) as slab 3A/3B, composed of grey sandstone (dims 0.4m x 0.24m; T 0.08m). 'There is a round boss on the top 3cm in diameter and 1cm high. The decoration consists of a ringed cross in low relief with rounded hollows in the angles. There is a short detached length of border at each of the two top corners. One arm is cut off by an incised line (probably a mistake). Reverse of 3A. Bears an outlined Latin cross with small rounded hollows in the angles. There is a flake missing from across the bottom' (ibid.). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011

Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or memorial practice. It may have marked a sacred space or served as a cross to denote a place of prayer or pilgrimage linked to St. Berrihert.
