Cross-slab in Ardane

In the S sector of an ecclesiastical enclosure (TS074-010----) known as St. Berrihert's Kyle and incorporated in an oval stone enclosure, stepped internally, built by the OPW in 1946 (Ó hÉailidhe 1967, 102). This slab is located in the S sector, on top of the wall. It is described by Ó hÉailidhe (1967, 110) as slab 9A/9B, composed of red sandstone (dims 0.43m x 0.19m; T 0.08m). 'Latin cross in low relief (7mm) with double squared hollows in the angles. Reverse of 9A. It bears a similar cross, less deeply cut' (ibid.). Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or burial practices. It may have served as a memorial or waymark, linked to the cult of St. Berrihert.
