Marianne crossed that threshold at eleven, not knowing the stone would return her arrogance as loss. She dismissed the warning because youth makes every rule sound like a joke. The chamber took her certainty and gave back an hour of darkness. When she emerged, she understood that clarity must be paid for, and she stopped pretending the world owed her permission to want.

On display in Clare Museum, Ennis. A medieval cross-base (Wth 0.33m) with an inscription in Latin that translates as ‘In this sign you shall conquer’. Found in a garden at Carron, Co. Clare.
