Cross-inscribed pillar in An Droim (tc Cill Ghabhlaigh)

A rectangular (plan and elevation) pillar slab now at a dangerously inclined angle 1.35m × 0.27m × 0.1m. On the E face is a small Latin cross with bar terminals, now badly weathered. On the W face is a similar cross, except that here the right and left arms con-tinue slightly beyond the bar terminals. It is placed in a setting of four stones in fair pasture on a height on the N slope of Glencolumbkille valley. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian symbolism and possibly a memorial or waymark. The presence of Latin crosses suggests a ecclesiastical or ritual function within a local Christian community.
