Cross in Cill Buaine — Report the wrong picture

Half-hidden on a steep slope above The Glen, the cross still stands beside its small shrine, looking out across St Finan’s Bay toward the Skelligs. People have long spoken of St Buonia there, perhaps a sister of St Patrick, while others credit St Brendan or his disciple. The stone is not grand, but it is certain: a pointed head, broad arms, and a deep Latin cross cut into its west face. To climb to it is to enter a place where faith, memory and sea light have been tangled since before written records.

KE088-027004- is located on a fairly steep, S facing slope of Knocknaskereighta mountain, towards the head of a broad valley which is locally known as ‘The Glen’. It affords excellent views to St Finan’s Bay and the Skelligs at W. The site is associated with St Buonia (Beoanigh), who is locally reputed to have been a sister of St Patrick. It has also been suggested that the site was founded by St Brendan or by St Beoanus, his disciple (O’Donoghue 1893, 280-3). Permission to survey the site was refused, and the following description is based on summary notes and the accounts published of it by Lynch (1902a) and Henry (1957). Stone Cross (KE088-027006-): This cross stands c. 4m W of the gable-shrine KE088-027008-. It measures .8m high and is .7m wide across its arms. Its head is roughly pointed and it features a deeply incised Latin cross on its W face. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
