Cross Fell rises to approximately 893 metres (2,930 ft) and is the highest point in England outside the Lake District. It is part of the Pennine range and is composed mainly of Carboniferous limestone and sandstone. The hill has historical significance as a key landmark on the Pennine Way and as a site with ancient Roman and medieval remains.
