What is recorded here

Crookston Castle is the only surviving medieval castle in Glasgow, standing on a hill above the Levern Water since the Darnley Stewarts rebuilt it around 1400. James IV broke its western wall with Mons Meg in 1489, and Regent Arran seized it in 1544, yet it remained the principal house of the earls of Lennox. Mary, Queen of Scots, may have been betrothed to Lord Darnley beneath its yew tree, whose wood was later carved into a model still kept in Pollok House.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Crookston Castle as Building(s) (medieval), Enclosure(s) (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Crookston Castle was built in the late 13th century by the Maxwell family, a powerful Scottish noble clan. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with the Maxwells' influence in the region and their role in Scottish border history.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
