Crawford Castle stands in ruins above the Clyde, guarding the Mennock Pass since 1175 when William Lindsay raised stone walls on an older earthwork. Roman soldiers may have camped there before him, and Clan Carmichael men kept its gates for generations. The castle gave its name to the largest barony in southern Scotland, linking Thor, Sveinn and every Lindsay earl who ever lived beneath its roof.
