Crathes Castle Policies holds two post-medieval structures beside a well in Aberdeenshire, waiting for someone to explain why they stood together. The castle name suggests service to a grand house, yet the policies name suggests separate ownership or use. That gap between castle and policies is the interesting part: one place may have worn two identities at once.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Crathes Castle Policies as Well (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Crathes Castle Policies are associated with Crathes Castle, which was built by the Gordon family in the early 16th century and later expanded in the 17th century. The policies are important as they form part of the historic landscape and estate management associated with one of the best-preserved Renaissance castles in Scotland.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
