Crannog is an artificial island, often built with timber, stone and soil, where people lived beside water rather than on land. In Milltown Lough, the crannog would have risen from the surface like a small dark room made visible, with reeds at its edge and shadow beneath. It is the kind of place where ordinary life became clever, because water was both danger and neighbour.
