Crannog in Derrycanon, County Fermanagh: an artificial island dwelling or platform, often timber and earth on wet ground, used as a home, shrine or refuge. The name itself carries the idea of a made island, a small world set apart from the shore. Whether for living, hiding or worship, the crannog is a place where humans shaped water and wood into a room of their own.
