CRANNOG in Ballykeel, Growell, County Down, is an ancient crater-like depression marked on the official map. The name suggests a small hollow or basin, perhaps shaped by water, ice or human use long before modern records. The flat Northern landscape makes such a mark stand out because it breaks the ordinary line of the earth. People may have gathered there to drink, worship, hide or simply rest from the rain.
