CRANNOG: DUMB LOUGH in Raffrey

CRANNOG: DUMB LOUGH

What is recorded here

Crannog: Dumb Lough is an artificial island in County Down, built by humans throwing stone and soil into deep water until dry land appeared. The official record leaves the exact date empty, yet the shape remains clear: a small round world raised from the lough, perhaps for a house, a shrine or a family kept separate from the ordinary shore. Dumb Lough gives the place a quiet name, as if the water stopped speaking when the island entered it.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as CRANNOG: DUMB LOUGH. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
