Cowie Castle was a ruined medieval fortress at the northern edge of Stonehaven, built to command the Causey Mounth and the sea lane above Dunnottar. It may have served as a royal hunting lodge, giving kings and their retinue a warm room when the North Sea wind dropped. Only a small section of masonry remains beside the Cowie Bridge, but the shape of the place is still clear: a guard post set where land and water both had to be watched.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Cowie Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Cowie Castle was built in the 13th century by the Cowie family, a prominent Scottish noble family. It is remembered as a significant medieval stronghold in Aberdeenshire and is associated with historical events during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
