Cow Castle is an Iron Age hillfort on an isolated Exmoor hilltop, its single rampart rising two metres to watch the River Barle valley. Local tradition claims fairies built the fort to protect themselves against the earth, turning human defensiveness into mythical mischief. Bracken still creeps toward the ancient stones, threatening the very structures that have stood since the first millennium BC.

The National Heritage List for England records Cow Castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Built in the 13th century by the de Mohun family, Cow Castle is remembered as a well-preserved example of a medieval moated manor house and is associated with the historical development of the local area in Devon.
