COURT TOMB in Aughnagon

COURT TOMB

What is recorded here

Aughnagon holds a prehistoric court tomb where ancient people shaped stone into a chamber for the dead. The structure still stands in County Down, marked as scheduled and separate from ordinary field boundaries. Those who built it understood death as a ceremony worthy of visible craft. They raised stone against forgetting, creating a place where the living could return beside the departed.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as COURT TOMB. Recorded period: PREHISTORIC. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Court tomb, dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000–2500 BCE). These tombs are significant as early communal burial sites, reflecting social organisation and ritual practices in prehistoric Ireland.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
