Cot Castle, Limekilns

Lime Kiln (period Unassigned)

What is recorded here

Cot Castle in Limekilns is a lime kiln, not a castle at all. The false name suggests towers and lords when the site may have been little more than heat, brick dust and men burning stone for mortar. That gap between the grand name and the brutal purpose is the interesting part.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Cot Castle, Limekilns as Lime Kiln (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
